Common Problems and Matters in Titanium Alloy Cutting Process

Titanium alloy has the advantages of high strength and low density, good mechanical property, toughness and corrosion resistance. However, the technical performance of titanium alloy is poor, and its cutting process is difficult. Titanium alloy is easy to absorb impurities such as hydrogen, oxygen, nitrogen and carbon, which will result in the decreased performance of finished products, even directly scrap the workpieces. Bango Alloy introduces some common problems and cautions in cutting titanium alloy:

Due to the small elastic modulus of titanium alloy, the clamping deformation and stress deformation of the workpiece during machining will reduce the machining accuracy of the workpiece. If hydrogen containing cutting oil is used, hydrogen will be decomposed and released at high temperature during cutting. It may also cause high temperature stress corrosion cracking of titanium alloy and auxiliary support can be added when necessary.

Some cutting oil with chlorine additive as the main component may decompose or volatilize poisonous gas when used. Safety precautions should be taken when used.After cutting, the parts should be cleaned thoroughly with cleaning agent to remove residual chlorine.

All tools contacted with titanium alloy shall be clean. The cleaned titanium alloy parts shall be free from oil or finger mark pollution, otherwise it may cause salt stress corrosion later.

Generally speaking, there is no fire when machining titanium alloy. Only the small chips produced in the micro cutting process can be fired. In order to avoid fire, in addition to cooling by pouring a large amount of cutting oil, the chip should also be prevented from piling up on the machine. The cutter should be replaced immediately after being blunt, or the cutting speed should be reduced, and the feed quantity should be increased to increase the chip thickness.

The above are the common problems and matters need to be watched out in titanium alloy cutting process. In titanium alloy cutting, choosing the special cutting oil of titanium alloy can greatly improve the efficiency.
